I decided to discontinue my poetry blog recently - here's why.

I used to think this would never happen. I am still very passionate about poetry and I read a lot of it, but somewhere along the line my passion for coding took over and sapped all of my creative energy so I neither had the time nor the energy to write poems any more.

Nonetheless, it took me over half a year to decide on posting that the site was on hiatus. I didn't have the heart to close it down definitively. Putting it on hiatus was hard enough.

This post is basically here to revisit what this site has meant to me, web-wise more than personally.

The first website I made

Yes. It was. Not counting the random school-thingies I made earlier. This was the first real site I ever made. It was in 2011. And even though I used a WYSIWYG editor/CMS, I felt it was a huge accomplishment at the time.

It was the first time I registered a domain name, and I didn't have a clue in the world what I was doing - but that's how I figured out what DNS was... It was the first time I had to design a website that was actually going to turn into something real - apart from doing a mockup and handing it in as a school assignment. It was the first time I had to create real content for a website. It was the first time I had a website up for long enough to actually figure out (somehow) what it took to maintain one. I did four re-designs of the site before I settled on the current one (which I think I made in 2013), but it was a labour of love all along.

In short, I learned so much from having this site. It was a great experience, and for that reason alone it would've hurt me to close the site down - but then there's the content as well. I know I have regular, returning visitors who come to read the poems and translations, and after four years I feel it's my duty to keep it all available to them.

So the site is now on hiatus. I doubt I'll revive it in the future since I've come such a long way since my poetry-writing days. But I can't guarantee that I won't do something creative with the content at some point. I have plans. I just don't have the time to carry them out immediately, unfortunately.

So in the meantime, while I wait for the time to code something awesome to display said content, if you should feel like going back and reading my poems/translations and whatnot from 2010 to early 2015 - feel free to click the link at the top of this article and see where it takes you.
